Names of Furanic Compounds

Furan analysis is useful for detecting and assessing thermal damage to cellulosic insulation in transformers. Unfortunately, a baffling assortment of variant names for the furanic compounds is encountered in lab reports and technical publications. To help TOA users and labs match the usual furanic compounds to field names used by TOA3 and TOA4, we have compiled the following information.

TOA3 has only one furan-related database field, called "furan". It is meant to represent the total concentration (ppb) of all five furanic compounds measured, or alternatively it can be used for the concentration of the dominant compound, 2-furfural.

TOA4 has a "totalfuran" field, which represents the total concentration (ppb) of all five furanic compounds measured. It also has individual fields for each of the five furanic compounds, as described below. Each of the compounds has a name, as used in the TOA4 user interface; a list of alternative names; one or more symbolic nicknames; a chemical formula; a unique Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) number; and a TOA4 field name.
